Do you Baptize infants?

Yes. Here’s why:

On the one hand, we Baptize infants because we believe that God is doing all the work in Baptism – He doesn’t need our help. On the other hand, we confess that Baptism is not valid without faith. Simply pouring water over someone’s head doesn’t make them a Christian. And so you might wonder – how can a baby have “faith”? That’s probably because you’re overthinking faith. Faith isn’t downloading the Small Catechism, or all of Scripture, or anything else – it’s an active trust. Babies exhibit active trust all of the time. You may get to witness that in Pastor Jay’s daughter after a while if you’re brave enough (and if they allow you) to pick her up into your arms. If she doesn’t cry, that’s faith. She believes that you will not drop her, and that picking her up is perfectly normal. Her faith will develop over the years along with her reason, but that same kind faith is the faith that God supplies to her in terms of His relationship with Her in Baptism. God does the lifting, we grow up into it with faith.
